As we pulled into the dirt driveway of a small home based in the countryside surrounding Da Nang, Vietnam, a very young mother was anxiously awaiting our arrival. She quickly led us into her home to meet her ten month old son named Tran. Upon entering the home, we were introduced to Tran’s grandmother, who is the main provider for the family— she was tightly holding her grandson with great pride and admiration. She thanked us for coming and began to divulge the story of Tran’s life. Tran was born with a congenital heart defect called Tetralogy of Fallot, meaning that he suffers from four different heart abnormalities. His defects resulted in heart failure and fluid buildup in his lungs, making it extremely difficult for him to breathe. We listened with difficulty as the grandmother rehashed the terror she felt on many occasions when helplessly watching baby Tran turn blue and faint due to a lack of oxygen. However, with the support of Healing Hearts Vietnam and Hoan My Da Nang Hospital, Tran underwent a two-part surgery and a 19-day hospital stay in attempt to fix his heart abnormalities. A few years have passed and Tran is now a thriving little boy who is able to breathe without difficulty. We were truly touched to witness the tears of gratitude and relief coming from the grandmothers face, knowing that her grandson could now live a healthy life. Without your help, it would not have been possible for Tran to receive his life saving surgery. Thank you for making this possible!
